Festetics Castle and Park, Dég

More information

This is the one and only castle built in classist style which can be visited in Hungary with beautiful English garden surrounding it. The castle is situated in the Central Transdanubian region of Hungary and was built on behalf of Antal Festetics, a wealthy Hungarian nobleman between 1810 and 1815.

The construction plans were made by architect Mihály Pollack ( key figure of neoclassical architecture, his main work is the Hungarian National Museum).

Many mysteries are connected to the House of Dég: according to legends, it was the secret headquarters of Hungarian Freemasonry, and it was for this reason that its beautiful assembly hall was designed to fit in the corner of the building.

The Festetics Family left the castle in 1944, due to nationalization in 1945 the building served as a children's home.

In the beautiful park there is a lake as well as an ornate house on a small island used to be a stable and the top floor a dwelling for one of the countess of the Festetics family. It resembles Dutch architecture made of red bricks.

Opening time: During winter it is closed
