This beautiful, late Renaissance castle was built between 1534 and 1537 in Sárospatak in the region of Northern Hungary. Its heyday was in the 17th century when it was owned by the Rákóczi family, the wealthiest aristocrats of Hungary. The most famous family member was II Rákóczi Ferenc, he led an anti-Habsburg war in 1705-1707. After the defeat of the rebellion, the Rákóczi family's wealth was confiscated. A museum inside the castle tells the history of the family and the Rákóczi Freedom Fight. There are also exhibitions on wine cultivation in the Hegyalja region and local ethnography.
