Visegrad Royal Palace
More information
Visegrad is a breathtaking place north of Budapest by the River Danube. We organise private tours here regularly, please fill in the form if interested.
A fortified settlement existed as early as the Iron Age. This is where Queen Maria, wife of King Bela IV, had a fortress built after the devastating Mongolian invasion (1241-1242)
In the Royal Palace you will travel back in time to the Middle Ages to 1335 when King Charles I welcomed the Czech king John and his son the Prince of Moravia, and the Polish king Casimir. The three kings gathered at the palace to sign a peace treaty and to form an alliance to protest against Vienna’s staple right, which forced the Hungarian, Czech and Polish merchants to stop selling their products in Viennese markets. The signed alliance opposed the Austrian policy of stopping the flow of goods.
It wasn’t just talks and plotting taking place at Visegrad though. The meeting was celebrated with tournaments in which brave knights in shining armour show their strength and their superior horsemanship. The spirit carries through to today with the same games and plays re-enacted every July.
